New compact two-channel confocal controllers enable two-sided thickness measurements using just one controller

Precision sensor supplier Micro-Epsilon has extended its confocalDT IFC 241x range of confocal chromatic controllers with the new IFC2412 and IFC2417 controllers, providing users with high performance, 2-channel variants of the ultra-compact IFC2411 and IFC2416 controllers. The new controllers both deliver the same high performance as their single-channel counterparts.

Due to integrated computing functions, the 2-channel controllers enable two-sided thickness measurements using a single controller. This expands the range of applications, particularly in industries such as semiconductor manufacturing, battery cell production, optical inspection of lenses, and machine building.

Two-channel controller for demanding applications

The compact IFC2412 controller offers two channels with an adjustable measuring rate up to 8 kHz and sub-micron resolution from 2 nm. The powerful IFC2417 controller operates at a measuring rate up to 25 kHz and also enables multipeak measurements of up to five transparent layers. Active exposure control of the CCD line ensures stable measurement results in both versions, even on challenging surfaces. The controllers are equipped with a robust IP40 aluminium housing and can be easily integrated into existing systems due to their extremely compact design. The controllers are conveniently mounted on a DIN rail in a control cabinet – ideal for OEM applications and industrial series production. Both controllers come with Ethernet and EtherCAT interface and two analogue connections. Additional fieldbus connections will be introduced later in 2026.

Sensors to meet every challenge

The new dual channel controllers are compatible with all available Micro-Epsilon Confocal sensors. From the ultra slim confocalDT IFS2402 models; with just 4 mm sensor diameter, up to the very latest confocalDT IFS2047-xHT/VAC models for operation in high ambient temperatures up to 200 °C.

Micro-Epsilon confocal sensors are available with measurement ranges from 0.1 mm up to 30 mm. For applications where space is restricted sensors are offered with 90° optics and many are also suitable for use within vacuum environments including UHV.

All-in-one sensor systems with Ethernet interface

The compact all-in-one confocal sensor systems IFD2410 and IFD2415 are considered leaders in their class and impress with their high precision, speed and stability, while being easy to operate. Each system combines both sensor and controller together to save space and simplify installation in production lines and machines, as no fibre optic cabling is needed between the sensor and controller These systems are available with an integrated Ethernet interface for data transmission. Measured values can be output directly and with 32-bit resolution. The compact systems do not require light guides and are ideal for series integration into machines and systems. The Ethernet interface expands the already available selection of fieldbuses (EtherCAT, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP). As with almost all Micro-Epsilon sensors, integration into the customer’s own software is possible using the freely-available MEDAQLib software and driver library.
