New high performance eddy current measuring system with control electronics that withstand temperatures up to 105 °C

Precision sensor supplier Micro-Epsilon has introduced a compact and powerful inductive eddy current measuring system for fast and precise displacement, distance and position measurement in industrial series and OEM applications. The new eddyNCDT 3020 measurement system, which comprises a controller and sensor, delivers precise and stable measurements even under extreme conditions – up to a maximum ambient temperature of 200 °C (controller up to 105 °C, sensor up to 200 °C).

The high performance DT3020 controller offers high resolution and detects fast movements due to a high measurement rate of 80 kSa/s. The cut-off frequency of 5 kHz (-3dB) reduces unwanted noise and ensures stable measurements with high precision (resolution up to 40 nm). The system is factory-tuned to ferromagnetic or non-ferromagnetic target materials. Its robust, IP67-protected design, compactness (102 x 53 x 30 mm) and flexible connection and configuration options make it ideally suited to industrial environments and machine integration.

Due to the extremely high temperature resistance of the sensor and controller, the complete measuring channel can be used in high ambient temperature environments such as welding applications, steel processing and die casting systems. The new controller is designed to work in high ambient environments up to 105 °C which enables the controller to be installed very close to the sensor. The reduced cable length between sensor and controller minimises temperature influences on the cable and increases measuring performance. The measurement signal remains stable and can be transmitted digitally or via analogue output over longer distances.

Best temperature-compensation worldwide

The eddyNCDT 3020 compensates for temperature fluctuations in the vicinity of the controller between + 10 and + 105 °C, so that the influence on the measurement result is minimal. Even temperatures on and around the sensor are compensated for up to
+180 °C. This means extremely high precision down to the nanometre range with excellent signal stability.

Wide range of sensors and easy setup

The robust controller can be combined with a wide variety of eddy current sensors from Micro-Epsilon that cover measuring ranges from 1 mm to 80 mm. These eddy current sensors are extremely resistant and measure very accurately even under the toughest of conditions. The sensors are particularly advantageous in applications with high pressure, dirt, oil, high temperatures or magnetic fields.

The eddyNCDT 3020 is configured using Micro-Epsilon’s freely downloadable sensorTOOL software, which provides excellent application flexibility due to its numerous setting options:

  • Customisable scaling of analogue output and measuring range.
  • Wide range of options for Condition Monitoring (limit value monitoring via switching output.
  • Data processing through averaging, mastering or data reduction.
  • 3-point linearisation to optimise measurement accuracy for customer-specific installation scenarios.

The eddyNCDT 3020 can be integrated via digital and analogue interfaces, as well as common fieldbuses (e.g. RS485, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP and PROFINET).
