4K laser scanners with Green Laser Technology ensure precise positioning of laminated safety glass

In the production of laminated safety glass, two or more glass panes are permanently bonded together with a tear-resistant, viscoelastic plastic film under heat and pressure. Precise positioning of the film is critical in order to ensure optical and composite quality. Overhangs, undercuts, film residues and foreign objects can impair quality and complicate subsequent production steps.

The high resolution 4K scanCONTROL LLT 8500-100 laser scanner with Green Laser Technology from Micro-Epsilon monitors film protrusion directly in the ongoing production process and continuously checks whether it is within the defined limits. At the same time, the sensor detects possible film residues on the glass pane, which allows deviations to be reliably detected during production and any defective components are identified at an early stage.

For the measurement, the scanCONTROL LLT 8500-100 is positioned above the glass edge running through the side. The measurement is carried out specifically on the film. The birefringence (double refraction) of the glass allows the film to be clearly captured, so that both the end of the glass and the film protrusion can be reliably determined. If a defined limit value is violated, the sensor (with integrated SMART 3D data processing) can stop the subsequent process via a PLC. In this way, non-contact inline inspection increases process reliability and quality, while helping to reduce rejects caused by incorrect film positioning.

At the heart of the scanCONTROL LLT8x00 series of laser scanners from Micro-Epsilon is innovative Green Laser Technology, a major advancement over conventional red and blue laser systems. Combined with an ultra-high resolution 4K sensor matrix, integrated 3D processing directly in the sensor head and Industrial Ethernet connectivity, the scanners set a new benchmark for precision, stability and ease of integration.

The 4K sensor matrix redefines what is possible in inline measurement with up to 4,224 points per profile. Line point resolution is down to 6 µm and a z-axis linearity of
< 0.8 µm (0.005%) enables even the finest structures to be captured with outstanding clarity, while maintaining high-speed performance across varying surfaces and lighting conditions. With a 10 kHz profile frequency and 25 million points per second, the scanCONTROL LLT8500 offers the highest measuring rate in its class.

A clear leap forward: Green Laser Technology

The introduction of 520 nm green laser technology represents a significant performance leap over traditional red and blue laser solutions. Operating close to the peak quantum efficiency of the receiver, the green laser delivers exceptionally stable signals with minimal noise; superior performance on challenging surfaces such as shiny metals, PCBs, and organic/translucent materials; shorter exposure times for faster measurement cycles; and increased repeatability and process reliability. The result is consistently accurate measurement in applications where conventional laser technologies struggle, dramatically expanding the range of viable inspection tasks.

Full 3D data processing is performed directly inside the sensor head, which eliminates the need for external processing units or PCs when in production, reducing system complexity, cost, cabling and integration time.

Processed measurement values can be transmitted directly to PLCs via Industrial Ethernet, or users can output calibrated 3D point clouds for further analysis. This makes the LLT8x00 series ideal for machine building and automation tasks.

Flexible data output for any application

The scanCONTROL LLT8x00 series can operate as a standalone SMART 3D sensor with onboard evaluation or as a high-speed 3D data source for external processing.

For onboard SMART 3D evaluation, Micro-Epsilon’s 3DInspect software tool allows users to configure measurement programs, analyse point clouds, and extract features directly within the sensor environment. Alternatively, calibrated point cloud data can be exported for processing using the customer’s own image processing software or existing vision processing tools.
